VisualForce and Lightning: Technology in Transition

Douglas Girvin
Digital TransformationSalesforce

Salesforce is taking bold steps to move their platform forward through many new innovations, perhaps none more foundational than Lightning. It powers the new Communities framework as well as the "Lightning Experience" which will completely redefine the current end user experience with one more modular, scalable, engaging and robust. As importantly, it allows developers like ourselves at Stantive to deliver customized solutions embedded in the Lightning User Interface.

Like all technology transitions, this one will take some time, and is predicted to be over 5-7 years. While this change is necessary and holds great promise for customers going forward, the challenge is what to do to deliver solutions to your customers, partners and employees today, that you can take with you in a Lightning future tomorrow.  Think of Sun Microsystems Java 20 years ago. At that time, few people in the industry felt that yet another new programming language was needed. Java was bold and focused on the emergence of the Internet and multiple platforms, security and portability. It was slow, lacked many features of it's much more mature brethren C++. Yet today, Java is the most popular development language in the world, and something much of Salesforce is built on.

So it is with Lightning. Salesforce is investing heavily in it and knows that it will drive the next generation of platform innovation. But there will be a transition and customers caught on the wrong side of that transition will see their investmentsin the current VisualForce technology lost while moving to Lightning too soon may result in less functionality and a poorer user experience. With OrchestraCMS, we remove all of these issues as well as moving the VisualForce page management and rendering back into our system. Built Natively on Salesforce, OrchestraCMS not only represents a complete rethink of Content Management, it also enables customers to deploy their Portals and Intranets into the Salesforce Communities Platform today, and seamlessly moving to Lightning when the time is right for them. All without any migration or reimplementation. OrchestraCMS can publish content and sites across all web channels and many other platforms. We originated in VisualForce and, like you, are moving to Lightning as fast as the platform can meet our needs.

OrchestraCMS enabled our customers to deliver robust solutions to their customers, partners and employees today and preserve their investment as the opportunity to move to Lightning emerges for them. No other technology platform provides this for Salesforce customers. And OrchestraCMS manages some of the most complex and high transaction volume intranets and portals in the world, so it's ready to deliver the most demanding dynamic, content rich user experiences our customers demand.

Enterprise class portals, intranets and public sites, delivered natively by OrchestraCMS on the Salesforce platform today and tomorrow, regardless of changing technologies, allow our customers to focus on their business and deliver success to their customers, partners and employees.

We have lots more to say about this and we're learning more about Lightning everyday. In the meantime, we would love to know your thoughts. What benefits and challenges do you see for your organization using Lightning?
